Mitchell Fotografik
Medium-format land- and cityscapes, postcard perfect, in a well-designed and innovative display. The work invites more admiration than passion, but is notable for its clear vision.

Michael Jang
Classy - sometimes hypnotic - photos from a seasoned pro. The huge assortment of pictures is smartly shown and very navigable. Highlights include his pictures from the American west and the 70's punk rock scene in New York City.

Matt Weber
A charged, if somewhat typical assortment of street shots by a native New York City photographer. The big thumbnail page lets you pick out the gems.

Guarionex
Slightly academic meditations on urban landscape forms presented in an easily navigable format.

Antonio Chagin
Dreamy 35mm and medium format landscapes of the Venezualan coast by a local artist are a highlight of this simply-designed site - best navigated with your 'back' button.

Jerome Wittingham
A brief off-beat look at Viking reenactors by an English photographer; a great example of how black and white can capture a timeless mood. While you're on this site, also take a look at the Pinhole gallery

Chris Guselle
Beautifully designed, macromedia-heavy site (not recommended for slower processors) of often gorgeous minimalist landscapes - and a moveable self-portrait - by this Canadian artist.

Sotol Gallery
Fine, if unchallenging work from a gallery housed in an old filling station in Marathon, Texas, a place apparently a great distance from anywhere in particular.

Michael Williams
Moody and beautiful views of Spain and the London Underground by a London-based photographer. One wishes it were as easy to navigate as it is handsome to look at.

Tony Makepeace
A well designed, thumbnail-heavy site featuring well-wrought medium format portraits of Arizonan Native Americans and Nepalese villagers. Some color.

So you wanna be a star???
Find out how to create a site that's worthy of The List!

Basic criteria for selection for Top Ten:

  • Compelling topics, presented well;
  • Photography must be in black and white (yes, sometimes the obvious must be clearly stated);
  • Fast download time (keep eye candy to a minimum);
  • Well-designed site (in other words, we like good HTML);
  • Popularity (if we get requests for a specific site, we'll factor that into our choice).

    Note: this list is meant for both established and new artists. If you've never been published before but your work is good, we want to see it! Quality, not reputation, is our most important criterion!

    Please do not send image file attachments when submitting a URL, since this eats up bandwidth and takes up precious space on the Black and White World Hard Drive. Any URL submissions that include file attachments will be disqualified without notice!

    Also please keep in mind that sites containing offensive or explicit subject matter will not be considered. Offensive material may include gratuitous violence, nudity or any other content that we deem inappropriate. Please email us if you need clarification.

    Due to the high volume of submissions, we don't have time to respond to every one. Rest assured, however, that we do look at every site that is submitted to us, and will contact you if/when we have selected your site. Thanks for your patience.

NOTE: Because of a change of employment, Black and White World's top ten list is going on temporary hiatus as of November 2000. As a result, we will not be reviewing URLs for a while. You may feel free to continue submitting them but keep in mind that we were 6 months behind before going on hiatus, so it would take a while. We regret this inconvenience and hope to rectify it shortly.
