November 2000 Top Ten
Photo Web Sites
Reviewed by Mason Resnick
NOTE: Because of a change of employment, Black and White World's top ten list is going on temporary hiatus as of November 2000. As a result, we will not be reviewing URLs for a while. You may feel free to continue submitting them but keep in mind that we were 6 months behind before going on hiatus, so it would take a while. We regret this inconvenience and hope to rectify it shortly.
Also, feel free to check out additional URLs in Black & White World's URL Review forum.
Cuba 90
In a style reminiscent of Gilles Peres, Argentinian photographer Pablo Cabado's photos of Cuba reflect the heavy hand of the repressive Castro regime. This point of view is emphasized via visual juxtapositions (like a man cowering under a large plaster finger), oblique points of view and other compositional cues. Very strong photo reportage.Lorne Resnick
Lorne Resnick's (no relation to Mason) vast site covers a wide range of subject matter, from portraits to landscapes and infrared work,as well as work from Cuba, digital, and rock 'n roll shots. Lots of stock shots, good photos of Africa, but you need to dig to find them (hint: look under Fine Art prints). Some color.Black & White Gallery
A keen eye for mood and light, punctuated by the occasional tornado, make this nature-and-archictecture site worth a visit, despite a funky design.Dario Coletti
Edgy documentary photography depicts life in mines, families being airlifted from Albania, Kirdish refugees, a Greek cafe in Rome, living in war-torn Sierra Leone and children living on the street in Bucharest. Strong images, some color (although we think the B&W work is the strongest).James Megargee Black and White Documentary Photography
Jim Megargee's American Tour is a collection of photos that is clearly influenced by Robert Frank's The Americans as well as by the work of Elliott Erwitt. They are slices of pure Americana that focus on juxtapositions (often humorous), faces and the under-appreciated art of finding some wierd order in chaos. This site is worth a liesurely visit.Bill Emory
Bill Emory's work is nothing if not ecclectic. We like his tender ongoing documentary of twin sisters, and another somewhat strange series about dogs. Check out his recent work, too!David Myers Images
David Myers's work grows on you. While his people pictures tend to be somewhat commercial, it gets stronger as you borrow into the site. Check out his Projects section for an interesting series on schools.B&W Photography by Amie Vanderford-Pfaff
We won't presume to totally understand what's going on in Amie Vanderford-Pfaff's studio images. What we can comment on is that they are well-executed if mysterious posed set-ups. For the curiosity-seekers.Mitchell Fotografik - Black and White
The work here by James Mitchell is grand and scenic, but we're really impressed with the look and feel of the site itself. There a some clever navigation tools here. Check it out--and enjoy the scenery!Conventional Photographs
What happens when Mason Resnick, your humble reviewer, founder of B&W World and dyed-in-the-wool street photographer, is let loose at trade shows in New York's Javits Convention Center? You get this collection of rather unconventional pictures.
So you wanna be a star???

Basic criteria for selection for Top Ten:
Note: this list is meant for both established and new artists. If you've never been published before but your work is good, we want to see it! Quality, not reputation, is our most important criterion!
Please do not send image file attachments when submitting a URL, since this eats up bandwidth and takes up precious space on the Black and White World Hard Drive. Any URL submissions that include file attachments will be disqualified without notice!
Also please keep in mind that sites containing offensive or explicit subject matter will not be considered. Offensive material may include gratuitous violence, nudity or any other content that we deem inappropriate. Please email us if you need clarification.
Due to the high volume of submissions, we don't have time to respond to every one. Rest assured, however, that we do look at every site that is submitted to us, and will contact you if/when we have selected your site. Thanks for your patience.
