The Photoplex!
Very slick on-line photo mag with lots of black and white. Photography and writing from Ken Kobre's textbook, "Photojournalism: A Professional's Approach." Site also includes photos of rock legends of the 70s, a photo essay on new-age healing and an interview with Annie Leibovitz.

A Postcard from Bahia
Three photo exhibits by Brazilian photographer Lita Cerqueira. Good environmental portraiture in Ladies and Gentlemen exhibits, but the download is slow.

Howard Frank Portfolio
Photos of New York street life in the 30s and 40s reminiscent of Walker Evans and anticipating the work of Robert Frank. A beautifully rendered subjective view of life back then.

Ted's Picture Pages
Ted is Ted Salois, chief photographer for the daily newspaper Pacific Stars and Stripes, which serves the U.S. armed forces in the Pacific. Lots of military-oriented shots. Check out the sports photos for some funny, action-packed moments. Some minor design problems (no thumbnails, photos are too small), but the pictures are worth seeing.

New York Public Library Photo Exhibits
From the extensive archives, images of the building of the Empire State Building by Lewis Hine and a documentary on Changing New York from 1935-1938. More than 50 pictures, some well known, others seen for the first time. Long download. Worth it.

Black and White Gallery
Good site showing it's second exhibit, THE FACE OF SOUTH AFRICA by South African native, Franco Forleo. His photographs bring out the beauty and complexity of South Africa and its people. Also some good links elsewhere.

Piet den Blanken: Cuba as it is.
Dutch photojournalist, published frequently in Europe, provides recent environmental portraits of Cubans.

January 1996

Phoenix Process Black and White pictures
Andrew Davidhazy, chairman of Imaging and Photographic Technology School of Photographic Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Photography shows the on-line world what happened when he modified a simple Polaroid camera to create 360-degree portraits. A wide-ranging mix of photos that just happen to be for sale. Individual images by Eduard Boubat, Diane Arbus, O. Winston Link and others. Subjects include a spooky portrait of Salvador Dali, plus photos of young Liz Taylor on a movie set and pregnant women floating in a pool. Ecclectic, entertaining.

April 1996 Top Ten Black and White Websites

Out From A Cage: Napal Photographs
Richard Robinson begins the narrative accompanying his sepia-toned images by saying, "There is the story of the black magician and how he taught me to believe in magic." The photos finely reflect Robinson's mystical journey.

New York, New York
Great street photos that Garry Winogrand would have been proud of. Tilted horizons, people rushing everywhere, their funky expressions frozen by Steven Hirsch's daylight flash.

Dead Birds
Carol Hudson is obsessed with roadkill. That's O.K., because the images she has made of dead birds transcend their subjects as the photographer uses her images to deal with mortality-related issues and emotions.

Paris Images
It's the city of lights, where Cartier-Bresson, Atget and Dionseau cut their teeth. Photos of the city that was made for photography.

MMAC Gallery
The Midwest Media Artists Center, based in St. Paul, Minnesota, has put together a diverse page of photographs, with images ranging from literal to strangely interperative. Some color, mostly black 'n white; uneven, but mostly good work.

Photography by Kenn Lichtenwalter
Cool page design shows off excellent photos of people isolated by frames within the picture's frame. Nicely lit, printed and displayed.

Time
Want a little controversy with your breakfast? Try these photos of anti-AIDS protests taken at the Gay Pride in San Francisco with a legendary all-plastic Diana camera by Richard Gilles.

Ted Salios Home Page
Stars and Stripes photographer Ted Salios returns to Black and White World with a redesigned home page and lots of new stuff. He has gone background-crazy, but the photos still look great. Lots of Asian Rim and military moments. Great eye.

PozzyTronic Individuation
Artist Aaron Gritzka's work is...well...different. Very conceptual and rather playful, digitally-enhanced black and white work by this multi-media artist. Worth a look.

John P. Kelley Photography
Some neat environmental portraits. Check out "The Snake."

May 1996

Chaudoc, Vietnam Photographs

Eight French independent photographers present their photography, taken around a common theme. A great place to see how different creative minds interpret an idea, each interpretation worthwhile. Worth revisiting.

LACMA Masterpieces of Photography
Some of the best-known photographs by some of the best-known photographers in the world are at this site. This is not hyperbole--especially when the photos include The Steerage by Alfred Steiglitz, and other equally well-known untitled works by Robert Frank, Edward Weston, Aaron Siskind, Minor White, Lázló Moholy-Nagy and Clarence John Laughlin. A must for students of photographic history.

Gang Life in East L.A.
Joseph Rodriguez says the streets of East Los Angeles are akin to the Wild West, but his photos and commentary show that East L.A. is really an American failure. 40 photos shown at this site will soon be published in East Side Stories: Gang Life in East LA (Touchstone, Simon & Schuster).

Greenland 1994
The little town of Ililussat, Greenland, is home to the most active glacier in the northern hemisphere. Stats: 20 million tons of ice produced daily, producing icebergs up to 100 meters. Marc Deneyer captured this very cool subject.

Steven E. Gross's Portfolio
A bride kisses a kid with a big "M&M's" box hanging from his neck; another rides a horse, while wearing her wedding gown, going full speed ahead. Definitely non-traditional wedding photography.

The Street View

Market Portraits
Taken in a market in Israel in the 70's, there are some great environmental portraits at this site.

Ron Wisdom Photos
Photos of the south and western United States. Ghost towns, forts, missions and geology, with an eye towards interesting light.
